Shape the Future of Loughanaskin

Westmeath County Council is undertaking community consultation regarding the regeneration of lands at Loughanaskin, Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

Following a period of early consultation in 2021, Westmeath County Council is excited to share the proposed Masterplan concept that will transform the site into a new urban quarter for the town.

We are now undertaking a final phase of consultation with the local community to share information on the draft proposals and engage on any questions in relation to the Loughanaskin masterplan.

What is being proposed?

The Masterplan incorporates a number of key design components which have been informed by international and national best practice, in addition to the findings and insights gathered through the initial phase of consultation,  and a detailed analysis of the site and wider area/region:

• Commercial Zone comprising state-of-the-art, flexible and mixed-use commercial office spaces to accommodate a variety of occupiers.
• Residential Zone designed with a mix of urban house types to help diversify local housing provision.
• Landing Space with a high-quality landscaped layout to provide recreational and amenity space.
• Green Route including a distinctive ‘high line’ link promotes permeability through the site and a pedestrian friendly connection between the Town Centre and Old Rail Trail greenway.
• St. Mary’s Gateway to act as a threshold entrance space with modest community and cultural uses.
• Active Ground Floors with a mix of uses to provide activity, animation and improve safety.

This project is funded under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and is part of Project Ireland 2040.

Consultation to date

In 2021, we began a process of early consultation with the local community and stakeholders connected to the Loughanaskin site. This included the hosting of two online webinars. The first online webinar took place with residents and members of the local community on Wednesday 24th February. A second online webinar with the Westmeath PPN and associated community groups took place on Wednesday 10th March 2021. If you were unable to join the sessions, you can watch the videos below.
